Pattern Debut: The BFF Bag
I’m excited to announce the release of my first PDF pattern, the BFF Bag Pattern.
Her origin story started last year. I had been wanting to make a fanny pack (yes, yes, I said fanny). I found there were several indie waist bag patterns** on the market. Yet, there wasn’t a singular pattern with all the features I wanted. It needed an outside pocket that securely held my phone for quick access. (And have you noticed that phones just keep getting bigger?!) I also wanted to be able to wear the bag as a fanny (yes, there it is again; wait until I tell you what BFF stands for) or sling it across my chest.
I whipped up a prototype (last minute, I imagine) that traveled with me to NYC that summer. Over the next few months, I tinkered with the functionality, features, and construction. Then Lauren Durr, long-distance sewing friend, helped me digitize it all and here we are!
The BFF features-
outside angled slip pocket with snap
zippered access to main interior
grab handle
adjustable strap, made-to-measure
slip and zippered interior pockets
right and left hand specific configurations
I trialed pre-quilted wovens, non stretch twill, stretch denim (interfaced), canvas and cork.
The BFF Bag doesn’t require much fabric. A fat quarter each for the main and lining will do, provided directionality of a print or nap isn’t a concern!
The bias binding finish gives the bag structure and adds an opportunity for a color pop. The assembly instructions take a new approach to this classic technique which streamlines the binding process.
I hope you’ll agree that the features and thoughtful design make this the Best Fucking Fanny as well! I can’t wait to see where your creativity takes the BFF Bag.
**I’ve edited this post to include the indie sewing patterns I considered buying before ultimately designing my BFF Bag. Should any of these patterns meet your needs or budget more closely, by all means, support those designers by purchasing their patterns. Community over competition, my friends!
